NEIGHBORHOOD
Grant Park is the oldest city park in Atlanta and serves over two million visitors a year. At 131 acres, it is fourth in size only to Chastain Park, Freedom Park and Piedmont Park, Grant Park has two major attractions besides the park itself: Zoo Atlanta, established in 1889 and originally known as the Grant Park Zoo; and the Atlanta Cyclorama which features the 1864 Battle of Atlanta from the American Civil War. The park also offers multiple playgrounds, walking paths, swimming pools, basketball courts, tennis courts, ballfields, a recreation center, and open pavilions available for special events.
Grant Park is also the in-town neighborhood surrounding Grant Park, and is Atlanta’s largest historic neighborhood. It includes the 48 acres of Oakland Cemetery (established in 1850), where Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones, 25 former mayors of Atlanta, six former governors of Georgia, and many Civil War dead are buried.
Boulevard and Memorial Avenues are the main commercial thoroughfares in the neighborhood. The popular Six Feet Under Pub and Fish House is the flagship tenant at the Jane. Along Boulevard you will find many more diverse restaurants including:
- Agave
- Daddy Ds
- Dakota Blue
- Grand Central Pizza & Pasta
- Ria’s Bluebird Café
- Solstice
- Taqueria Nayarit
- The Scratch Factory
The nearby neighborhoods and shopping districts of Cabbagetown, East Atlanta Village, Glenwood Park, Downtown and the Edgewood Retail District each offer additional shopping and dining opportunities from major national retailers (such as Best Buy; Target; Lowe's; Barnes & Noble; Bed, Bath & Beyond) to many charming smaller shops. For the sports lover, Turner Field, the Georgia Dome, and Philips Arena are all located nearby. Grant Park is also convenient to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and historic district, Sweet Auburn Curb Market, Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Aquarium, the CNN Center, and the World of Coca-Cola. The Grant Park neighborhood offers easy access to I-20 as well as I-75/85. It is served by MARTA bus routes and is convenient to the King Memorial MARTA rail station.
Other sites of interest in Grant Park include the Atlanta Stockade, Fort Walker and the Grant Mansion, for which the area was named.
